Red Rabbit is a friendly little specialty coffeehouse and roaster in Wellington’s cool Hannah Factory redevelopment. Green coffee is sourced through Falcon Coffees, a UK origin coffee specialist, Mercanta and Auckland’s Framework, and roasted at the back of the shop by owner Steve Barrett.
Red Rabbit focuses almost exclusively on washed coffees. Hopper, the Red Rabbit seasonal espresso blend, might be a mix of Ethiopia Konjo and Costa Rica Finca Naranjo, while single origin filter brews come via Aeropress, Swiss gold, V60 and Chemex.
Red Rabbit’s focus on washed coffee makes for some of the cleanest filter brews in Wellington. A Roi Kenya AA through the Aeropress is rich and savoury, with clean, crisp fruit – a vibrant and complex coffee – while a Mexico Finca Muxbal has riper fruit and the earthier flavours that seem to be typical of Mexican coffees.
The tight space nestles besides the Leeds Street Bakery, which supplies slices, cookies and scones for snacks, and bread for sandwiches. The laneway area around the redevelopment of the former shoe factory is also home to the Wellington Chocolate Factory, Six Barrel Soda Co and artisan peanut butter-makers Fix and Fogg.
