The offer at Maillard Toast and Espresso Bar is as compact as the tiny space, and the name says it in two words – espresso and toast.
There’s Vegemite (of course) and peanut butter (house-made) for traditionalists, but beyond that the one page menu features very little that you would find on the average suburban breakfast table.
Toasted slices of Ed’s Bread arrive with a slather of creamy mascarpone and another slather of dulce de leche with a sprinkle of pink Himalayan salt, or with Belgian butter, freshly ground cinnamon and a sprinkle of panela sugar (a homage to the cinnamon toast at Trouble Coffee and Coconut Club, the original San Francisco toast cafe).
Toast and espresso all day
A spread of tahini, honey and pistachio sounds like an approved healthy food choice, and the orange and red onion marmalade with triple cream cheese is grownup savoury-sweet.
Co-owner Zoran Pajic says the pizza at Carlton’s DOC inspired a slice of potato sourdough topped with San Daniele prosciutto, San Marzano tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella, and his partner, Lauren Komel, draws on her Italian background for a mix of gianduia, crushed hazelnuts and mascarpone that’s a superior riff on Nutella.
Coffee is the Allpress Supremo blend – a dark, toasty and reliable drop.
