The view from the penthouse of St Kilda’s new, err, iconic Icon apartment building is no doubt really something – park, lake, bay, city, mountains: the whole Melbourne deal.
The view at street level not so much: the messy, trafficky knot of St Kilda junction is the main visual attraction … better to look inside to Icon Coffee, a small, smart showcase of top Melbourne roasters with a fitout that won a silver at the 2015 Melbourne Design Awards for its cool Scandi minimalism.
The house espresso for black and white is Small Batch Roasting Co’s Candyman blend. In a short black – precision ground on a Victoria Arduino Mythos, extracted on a La Marzocco – the Candyman is a great example of Melbourne specialty espresso roasting: nicely developed, complex and clean.
Filter brews of single origins from Market Lane Coffee and Seven Seeds come via Clever Coffee Dripper. A Seven Seeds Colombia Piramide is lemon-bright, clean and juicy, the Market Lane El Salvador Miravalle more chocolatey and stone fruit sweet.
Tea from Larsen and Thompson gets similar brewing care in Teaology brewers and comes in varieties including Earl Grey, camomile, and a Japanese-style green tea grown in Victoria.
For the hungry there are sweet and savoury bites – maybe a tasty egg and bacon roll with house-made barbecue sauce …or an iconic ginger toffee ball from Cobb Lane Bakery.
