Gumption is the city project of top Marrickville specialty roaster Coffee Alchemy, nestled in the high-Victorian setting of the 19th-century Strand Arcade.

The small space is bustling with a crew of baristas making espressos and pourovers for a fast-turnover crowd of city workers and shoppers, and service is surprisingly quick, even at peak coffee times.

There’s the full range of Coffee Alchemy’s crazy-name alchemical blends – Sibilla’s Brew, Gossamer Gold, Paracelsus Punch – plus a selection of single estate coffee, too: maybe a Colombia Matambo AAA or a Carlos Imbachi washed coffee from Huila.

A stool at one of the shared bar tables under the arcade’s vaulted glass roof is the spot to enjoy a pourover of Ethiopia Hunda Oli in a chunky glass tumbler. Hunda Oli is a co-op in the Limu region, and the coffee has subtle floral aromas, peach nectar sweetness and a toffee-like finish.

Space is tight inside, where the fitout channels the arcade’s mood with a big brass-edged mirror and colourful leadlight: there’s just room to lean at a narrow ledge over a cup of Coffee Alchemy’s bespoke milk blend, Goodness Galileo.
