Bloom Coffee Bar hits south end of Rathdowne Street

At the southern end of Rathdowne Street, Carlton, barista Darren Yee has set up shop with this cool and compact espresso and brew bar.

Bloom Coffee Bar is a real gem, hidden away down the south end of Rathdowne Street away from the North Carlton village action.

Former Filter, Auction Rooms and Slater Street bench barista Darren Yee is the man in charge of the three-group La Marzocco here, and the focus is firmly on the coffee.

The narrow space is all cool grano floors, two-top tables along one wall and a concrete-topped bar. Food is minimal: a small selection of cookies, pastries and a killer brownie, plus a couple of baguettes.

This is coffee bar territory, not cafe, just like the name says.

Beans are from Auction Rooms’ sister roaster Small Batch Roasting Co. The seasonal Candyman blend makes a toffee-sweet flat white, a weekly single origin features for black espresso, and there are three singles roasted for filter.

A pourover of Kenya Ngurueri is a juicy cup with apple acidity and hints of caramel sweetness, and a delicate Ethiopia Aricha has hints of grape and white tea.

On the weekend you might snare a ham and cheese toastie, and catch 2014 Australian Brewers Cup champion Devin Loong on the pourovers.
